For my graduate class, Communication Research, I explored the effect of marijuana use on GPA with a quantitative study. I posed the following research question: What is the relationship between the frequency of recreational marijuana use and academic performance among media and communication arts (MCA) college students? Online, self report surveys were distributed to the students enrolled in a media and communication arts program at a New York metropolitan-area private university. Using SPSS, statistical tests were conducted to analyze the survey data. The results determined that there was a weak, negative correlation, meaning, as frequency of use increases, GPA decreases. However, these results were not statistically significant, due to the small sample size. These results do compare with the previous studies finding a negative correlation.
